Elbow emerge as Mercury winners Elbow’s fourth studio offering, The Seldom Seen Kid, has won the Nationwide Mercury Prize for Best British album.
The rock group were crowned with the prestigious title seven years after their first nomination for acclaimed debut album Asleep In The Back.
"I know we’re supposed to be cool but this is quite literally the best thing that has ever happened to us," frontman Guy Garvey said as they collected the prize.
He dedicated the award to Brian Clancy, a friend of the band who died a few years ago and had inspired a number of the albums tracks.
Others nominated for the award included Radiohead, Estelle, Last Shadow Puppets, Adele, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, British Sea Power and Neon Neon.
Hailing from Bury, the band formed in 1990 and have released four albums.
The Seldom Seen Kid - produced, recorded and mixed by the band - reached number five in the UK album chart this year.
